About Vy Buss

Vy Buss is part of the Vy Group and operates bus services across Norway and Sweden. The company serves a large number of passengers each day, both on board buses and at transport hubs such as airports and terminals. Payments in these environments must work consistently across mobile and fixed setups, while supporting high transaction volumes..

As part of its ongoing efforts to modernise public transport, Vy Buss focuses on simplifying operations and reducing complexity, while ensuring that payment solutions remain secure and adaptable to different sales scenarios.

The challenge: multiple devices and complex setups

On board its buses, Vy Buss relied on two separate devices: a tablet running the ticketing system and a traditional payment terminal for card payments.

Managing multiple devices increased operational overhead, from charging and maintenance to daily handling by drivers. It also introduced additional steps in the payment flow, making on-board sales more complex than needed.

A SoftPOS solution for fast, mobile payments

To simplify on-board payments, Vy Buss chose Softpay, a SoftPOS solution that turns any device into a secure payment terminal. In this case, it is running on Sunmi V2S devices and integrated with the ticketing partner Turnit, a provider of inventory, sales and distribution management solutions for public transport operators.

With Softpay, contactless card payments are handled directly on the same Android device that runs the ticketing application. This removes the need for a separate payment terminal on board buses and reduces the overall hardware setup.

"Managing two separate devices added complexity to something that should be simple for our drivers. By running Softpay directly on the same device as our ticketing system through Turnit, we've cut down on hardware, maintenance and handling on board, while giving passengers a fast, familiar way to pay with card," said Bjørn Rebne, Commercial Director at Vy Buss.

Softpay benefits for transportation:

  • Accepts card payments directly on the ticketing device
  • Eliminates the need for a separate payment terminal
  • Reduces hardware to a single device per bus
  • Simplifies daily handling for drivers in a mobile environment

The result is a more streamlined onboard payment system that is easier to operate and maintain during daily bus operations, with payment processes that enable quick transactions and are familiar and user-friendly for customers.

Expanding into Self-Service

Building on the success of its onboard SoftPOS setup, Vy Buss has taken the next step in modernizing passenger payments by launching self-service kiosks at airports and airport hotels. Passengers can now purchase tickets independently at locations such as Oslo Lufthavn and other airports and airport hotels, without the need for driver or staff assistance.

This expansion is delivered in partnership with Salespoint, a Norwegian software company specializing in comprehensive IT and point-of-sale solutions for retail, hospitality, and e-commerce. Salespoint's platform powers the self-service kiosks, bringing together integrated hardware, software, and payment capabilities into a seamless experience for travelers.

Lexit Group Norway AS has delivered the hardware. Lexit Norway is a Norwegian technology and automation company headquartered in Kløfta, originally founded in 1993 as Strekkodesystemer AS. It provides hardware and software solutions for data capture, digitalization, POS, RFID, serving industries such as manufacturing, warehousing/logistics, and retail.

Self-service kiosks let us serve passengers at the airport and airport hotels around the clock, not just when staff are available. Bringing Softpay into this solution means the same reliable payment experience passengers already know from our online sales is now available at the kiosks, without adding a separate terminal to manage,” said Bjørn Rebne, Commercial Director at Vy Buss.

Self-service benefits for Vy Buss passengers:

  • Always accessible regardless of staff presence
  • Consistent payment technology across both on-board and kiosk environments
  • Faster ticket purchasing with minimal wait times
  • Familiar contactless card payment experience powered by Softpay

This rollout marks a significant step in Vy Buss's broader strategy to offer flexible, passenger-friendly payment options across all touchpoints, from the bus to the terminal and beyond.
