Friends & Brgrs is a Finnish restaurant chain founded in 2014, specialising in freshly prepared burgers. The company operates 38 restaurants.
To serve guests both at the counter and through self-service, Friends & Brgrs introduced a new ordering and payment setup with Nets, Yonoton and Softpay.
“As our product is better burgers, the customer experience must also be better than usual,” says Tuomas Piirtola, Managing Director of Friends & Brgrs.
The challenge
Friends & Brgrs wanted to modernise its ordering and payment systems, giving guests more flexibility in how they order and pay.
Some guests prefer ordering directly from restaurant staff, while others choose self-service. Friends & Brgrs needed to support both, with payments built into the ordering process.
The company also wanted a system that could grow with the business and support new digital services. An important requirement was to introduce the new technology without closing restaurants or disrupting daily service.
The solution
The new setup combines Yonoton's restaurant technology, Nets' payment services and Softpay's Tap to Pay App.
Yonoton provides the point-of-sale systems, self-service kiosks and a unified order management system that connects orders from the counter, kiosks and delivery services such as Wolt.
Softpay enables payment acceptance at self-service kiosks, with the payment functionality integrated into the checkout screen. Guests can place their orders and complete payments at the kiosk, without moving to a separate checkout.
The results
Self-checkout (SCOs) has helped Friends & Brgrs increase the average spend per guest. As guests place their orders, the kiosks suggest sides and desserts, making it easy to add something extra with just a tap.
“The self-service checkout has enabled us to increase the average spend per customer and is easy for customers to use.”
— Tuomas Piirtola, Managing Director, Friends & Brgrs
Guests now have more ways to order and pay. They can use a self-service kiosk or order at the counter, with contactless payment options available in both settings. The kiosks also support ePassi and Edenred employee benefit payments.
The transition was completed while all restaurants remained open, with no disruption for guests. According to Piirtola, feedback from both employees and guests has been largely positive, although introducing the new systems required some guidance during the initial period.

Payments built into the ordering experience
For Friends & Brgrs, ordering and payment now happen on the same screen. With Softpay built into the kiosks, there’s no separate checkout, and every order is a chance to add something extra.
